It’s not that tricky to start affiliate marketing. You just need to follow these simple steps…
1. Decide on a platform- You can start doing affiliate marketing on any platform, like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, even Instagram would do.
It’s much easier to build your audience and increase the affiliate sales by- a) Blog
b) YouTube Channel
Once the site is set up, optimize it for search engines, this way you have a better chance of ranking. Then you can attach links to your description, given that you need to disclose that you are including affiliate links. The Federal Trade Commission requires you to be transparent when receiving income from endorsement.
2. Choose your niche- If you start a blog, you need to choose a particular niche, then choose a topic that focuses on the specific category. This can help you build a more focused audience and help you rank higher in search engines. Later when the audience is building focus on the topics you’re interested in, this will not let your site die due to lack of consistency.
3. Find Affiliate Programs to join- There are 3 types of affiliate programs to choose from :
a) High paying, Low volume - These are the affiliate programs for niche products with high payouts. There tends to be a stiff competition on such programs. (Example- CovertKit’s Affiliate Program)
b) Low paying, High volume - These are the affiliate programs for niche products with low payouts but mass appeal. The redeeming quality of such programs is that they offer tons of products to sell. (Example- Amazon’s Affiliate Program)
c) High paying, High volume - These are the affiliate programs for niche products with with mass appeal and high commission.
Choosing among these programs depends on your niche and your level of expertise.
4. Create Great Content- All you need to do is create high-quality content where your affiliate links fit naturally. For example, if you’re doing reviews, actually purchase the product and test it. If not purchasing, you could review the products you own at your home. That’s always a great start as a beginner.
5. Drive traffic to your Affiliate Site- After creating great content, next step will be to get more people to read it, so they’ll click on your affiliate links.
There can be 3 strategies to consider:
a) Paid Traffic - This is where you pay for traffic to your site. This can be done using PPC ads. The advantage of this is the moment you start paying you get traffic.
b) Search Engine Optimization(SEO) - This is the practice to optimize your pages to rank high in search engines like Google. For as long as you can rank high in the search engines for your target keywords, you can get consistent and passive traffic.
c) Build an email list- This allows you to communicate with your readers anytime. Use them to tell fans about new content and make them visit your site more, this leads to more affiliate clicks and sales.
6. Get Clicks on your affiliate links-
For this you need to consider these things:
a) Link Placement- You need to make every other word a link in your introduction, always placing link at the end of the content will rarely generate clicks.
b) Context- The context should be apt and understandable.
c) Callouts- Use callouts like buttons, tables, boxes to attract readers and make the post more skimmable.
7. Convert clicks to sales - Two conversions need to take plae for you to make money.
a) Click to the product page
b) Visitor purchasing the product.
In case of affiliate marketing, the merchant controls the checkout, and their conversion rates are out of your control, you just need to find merchants with programs that convert well.
